Portico Announces Archive Support Payment for LibrariesSan Antonio, TX, January 22, 2006 - Portico, a not-for profit electronic archiving service, announced today its Annual Archive Support payment for participating libraries. Initiated by JSTOR in 2002, Portico builds upon and significantly advances JSTOR’s efforts to provide a trusted and reliable community-based archive for electronic scholarly journals. The library support payment announced today will help Portico defray the cost of ongoing archive operations. The Annual Archive Support payment for libraries are based on the total library materials expenditure (LME) for an individual institution, with payments ranging from $1,500 to $24,000 per annum. Libraries that initiate support for Portico in 2006 or 2007 will be designated "Portico Archive Founders". Those beginning their support in 2006 will receive a 25% savings on the Annual Archive Support fee for five (5) years, and those starting in 2007 will receive a 10% savings for five (5) years. Portico is also committed to working with library systems and consortia, and will offer additional modest savings to libraries that participate via groups working with Portico. For more than two years, the Portico team has worked to develop the necessary technologies to ingest, normalize, and maintain these important, yet vulnerable, electronic scholarly journals. In addition, Portico has engaged in extensive discussions with stakeholders in the scholarly publishing industry to build an archive model that balances the needs of publishers and libraries. Publishers from both North America and Europe have committed to archiving their electronic journals with Portico. These include: Elsevier, American Mathematical Society, UK Serials Group, Symposium Journals, and The Berkeley Electronic Press.
