Portico Unveils Holdings Comparison Service

Portico, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to preserve scholarly literature published in electronic form and to ensure that these materials remain accessible to future generations, announced today the availability of a Holdings Comparison Service to complement its rapidly growing archive of born-digital scholarship. The new service is designed to assist librarians in making decisions about maintaining print holdings of e-journal content being preserved by Portico.

"Libraries are making daily decisions about their print collections as they manage the migration from print to born-digital literature, and understanding what portion of their collections are being actively preserved by trusted third-parties is an important criterion in making thoughtful migration decisions," said Amy Kirchhoff, Portico's Archiving Service Product Manager. "Our hope is that our Holdings Comparison Service will provide a useful mechanism for librarians to compare their journal holdings – both print and electronic – to what is being preserved in Portico, and be a helpful tool in assisting with these important collection management decisions."

Currently, over 6,100 journal titles from 38 publishers have been entrusted to the Portico Archive for long-term preservation. Participating publishers range from commercial houses, university presses, and scholarly societies. The list of participating publishers is available at http://www.portico.org/about/part_publishers.html.
