Joining Portico offers numerous and long lasting benefits and requires only a few simple steps.

The steps for a library to sign up are:

• step 1:

  Determine your Library’s Total Materials Expenditure (LME) in U.S. Dollars

  Participating libraries are asked to make Annual Archive Support payments based on their total library materials expenditures. Portico uses the definition of LME provided by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) to determine libraries’ Annual Archive Support payments.

  LME Overview

  A library’s LME can be derived from the following expenditures (print and electronic), as described by the ARL:

  • Monographs: total number of volumes purchased; include monographs in series and continuation.
  • Current Serials: total number of subscriptions, not titles. Include duplicate subscriptions and, to extent possible, all government document serials even if housed in a separate collection.
  • Other Library Materials: total number of backfiles of serials, charts and maps, audiovisual materials, and manuscripts.
  • Miscellaneous Expenditures: total number of other materials expenditures for services and items such as bibliographic utilities, literature searching, security devices, memberships for the purposes of publications, etc.

  Portico uses Association of Research Libraries’ (ARL) definition of LME.

  International institutions should convert the LME in their local currency to USD. A currency conversion tool is available at http://www.xe.com/ucc/

  Determine your Annual Archive Support payments

  Once your library LME has been determined, please see the Portico Annual Archive Support payment tables below to determine your payment amount. Payment amounts are listed for e-journals and e-books. There are no fees for d-collections. See the notes on these tables for further information. Portico also offers additional savings to participating consortia and Archive Founders.

  An Archive Founders Savings of 25% per year will be provided to all libraries that initiate participation in their first year of eligibility for this service (2011 for new participants, or at renewal for existing participants).

  Portico’s D-Collection Preservation Service is solely supported by the individual publishers that have committed their d-collections to the archive. Should a trigger event occur, Portico will provide access to a publisher’s previous customers of the collections. For more information, contact participation@portico.org.

  Review and complete the Portico Journal Archive License

• step 4:

  Return two signed originals of the License to Portico
