Service for Libraries
The Portico service offers a permanent archive of electronic
scholarly journals, e-books, d-newspapers, and local library content, thereby
providing protection against the potential loss of access to e-literature
integral to a library's collection.
Portico provides all libraries supporting the archive with campus-wide access to archived content when specific trigger events occur, and when titles are no longer available from the publisher or other source. Trigger events include:
- A publisher stops operations; or
- A publisher ceases to publish a title; or
- A publisher no longer offers back issues; or
- Upon catastrophic and sustained failure of a publisher's delivery platform.
Portico also provides a reliable means to secure perpetual access, if participating publishers choose to designate Portico as a provider of post-cancellation access. In addition, select librarians at participating libraries are granted password-controlled access for verification and audit purposes only. Independent audits are also conducted periodically. Portico is currently the only digital preservation service to be independently audited by the Center for Research Libraries (CRL) and subsequently certified as a trusted, reliable digital preservation solution that serves the needs of the library community. Read the announcement for more information.
Participation Benefits
A relationship with Portico offers libraries:
- A practical means to act upon their traditional preservation mandate in support of the parent institution's educational mission.
- An opportunity to accelerate the transition to preferred electronic resources without sacrificing future accessibility.
- Reduced system-wide preservation costs that, through collaborative effort, eliminates the need for each library to locally receive and archive electronic journal literature.
- An opportunity to rely more heavily upon electronic resources and realize savings through reduced costs associated with print subscriptions, handling, and storage.
- A means to secure perpetual access if a participating publisher chooses to designate Portico as a provider of post-cancellation access.
