Participation in Portico allows publishers to meet criteria for a number of initiatives that require long-term preservation of content, including:

  • CHORUS—Participating publishers that are members of CHORUS meet the preservation and access requirements for federally funded research in the United States.
  • DOAJ—Long-term preservation is one of the seven criteria for a seal of approval from the Directory of Open Access Journals.
  • Medline Indexing—The Medline Policy on Indexing Electronic Journals allows for journals to be deposited in a certified repository in lieu of full participation in PubMed Central.
  • Plan S—Mandatory quality criteria for Plan S-compliant journals, platforms, and other venues includes the deposit of content to a digital preservation or archiving program.

Publishers in the UK may also benefit from Portico’s arrangement with the British Library, through which content deposits necessary to meet mandatory legal deposit requirements for electronic content may be made by Portico on behalf of the publisher.
