Every year, we continue to make strides in expanding the Portico archive and building our expertise to serve the needs of our participants and ensure that our service remains stable and sustainable. Our activities in 2018 included:

Expanding the archive to more than 1.6 billion files
Portico continues to ingest a growing stream of e-journal, e-book, and digital collection content into the archive. In 2018, the content in the archive grew by 19%, and we now have the support of 586 publishers and 1,024 libraries. Our Year In Review provides a snapshot of the growth in content, participation, trigger events, and usage.

Investing in technical infrastructure
We recently completed a project to develop a new technical infrastructure for the Portico archive. The new system has scaled effectively to accommodate a more than 50% increase in the number of  archival units and files, and a more than 100% increase in archival storage in the past two years. It also allows for a significant increase in the speed of content processing. Ultimately, this added capacity allows Portico to remain a leading-edge preservation service and better positions us to consider new services and products without compromising our ongoing work. Strengthening the security of the archive
This past year, Portico and the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB), the National Library of the Netherlands, finalized an agreement to place an online replica of the Portico archive at the KB. Portico also has replicas of the archive hosted in the U.S and in cloud storage; the replica hosted by the KB will provide additional assurance of the long-term safeguarding of the content we preserve.

Exploring TDM with not-for-profit partners
Text- and data-mining (TDM) is an increasingly important research tool for faculty and students. We’re exploring a new TDM collaboration among the not-for-profit services Portico, JSTOR, and HathiTrust that will permit the archives to be searched in a federated manner, with delivery of consistently formatted analysis. Several Portico publishers have agreed to contribute their content as part of a pilot. We look forward to sharing our progress and receiving your feedback later this year.
